    The Perils of Confusing Nesting with Chaining in Psychological Explanations.Gillian A. Barker, Patrick G. Derr & Nicholas S. Thompson - 2004 - Behavior and Philosophy 32 (2):293 - 303.
Despite its diminished importance amongst philosophers, the deductive-nomological framework is still important to contemporary behavioral scientists. Behavioral theorists operating within this framework must be careful to distinguish between nesting and chaining. Explanations are chained when the explanandum sentence of one explanation is one of the antecedent conditions of another. They are nested when one of the antecedent conditions or the explanandum sentence of one explanation is one of the covering laws of another. Confusion between nesting and chaining leads to explanation (...)

Missed nursing care as an ‘art form’: The contradictions of nurses as carers.Clare Harvey, Shona Thompson, Maria Pearson, Eileen Willis & Luisa Toffoli - 2017 - Nursing Inquiry 24 (3):e12180.
This article draws on the free‐text commentaries from trans‐Tasman studies that used the MISSCARE questionnaire to explore the reasons why nurses miss care. In this paper, we examine the idea that nurses perpetuate a self‐effacing approach to care, at the expense of patient care and professional accountability, using what they describe as the art of nursing to frame their claims of both nursing care and missed nursing care. We use historical dialogue alongside a paradigmatic analysis to examine why nurses allow (...)

The Digital Humanities: A Primer for Students and Scholars.Eileen Gardiner & Ronald G. Musto - 2015 - Cambridge University Press.
The Digital Humanities is a comprehensive introduction and practical guide to how humanists use the digital to conduct research, organize materials, analyze, and publish findings. It summarizes the turn toward the digital that is reinventing every aspect of the humanities among scholars, libraries, publishers, administrators, and the public. Beginning with some definitions and a brief historical survey of the humanities, the book examines how humanists work, what they study, and how humanists and their research have been impacted by the digital (...)

Are depression and suffering distinct? An empirical analysis.Richard G. Cowden, Dorota Wȩziak-Białowolska, Eileen McNeely & Tyler J. VanderWeele - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Depression and the subjective experience of suffering are distinct forms of distress, but they are sometimes commingled with one another. Using a cross-sectional sample of flight attendants, we tested for further empirical evidence distinguishing depression and suffering. Correlations with 15 indices covering several dimensions of well-being indicated that associations with worse well-being were mostly stronger for depression than suffering. There was a large positive correlation between depression and suffering, but we also found evidence of notable non-concurrent depression and suffering in (...)

  27. The Other Side of Cognitive Control: Can a Lack of Cognitive Control Benefit Language and Cognition?Evangelia G. Chrysikou, Jared M. Novick, John C. Trueswell & Sharon L. Thompson-Schill - 2011 - Topics in Cognitive Science 3 (2):253-256.
Cognitive control refers to the regulation of mental activity to support flexible cognition across different domains. Cragg and Nation (2010) propose that the development of cognitive control in children parallels the development of language abilities, particularly inner speech. We suggest that children’s late development of cognitive control also mirrors their limited ability to revise misinterpretations of sentence meaning. Moreover, we argue that for certain tasks, a tradeoff between bottom-up (data-driven) and top-down (rule-based) thinking may actually benefit performance in both children (...)

Who uses more strategies? Linking mathematics anxiety to adults’ strategy variability and performance on fraction magnitude tasks.Pooja G. Sidney, Rajaa Thalluri, Morgan L. Buerke & Clarissa A. Thompson - 2018 - Thinking and Reasoning 25 (1):94-131.
ABSTRACTAdults use a variety of strategies to reason about fraction magnitudes, and this variability is adaptive. In two studies, we examined the relationships between mathematics anxiety, working memory, strategy variability and performance on two fraction tasks: fraction magnitude comparison and estimation. Adults with higher mathematics anxiety had lower accuracy on the comparison task and greater percentage absolute error on the estimation task. Unexpectedly, mathematics anxiety was not related to variable strategy use. However, variable strategy use was linked to more accurate (...)

Incorporating Global Components into Ethics Education.George Wang & Russell G. Thompson - 2013 - Science and Engineering Ethics 19 (1):287-298.
Ethics is central to science and engineering. Young engineers need to be grounded in how corporate social responsibility principles can be applied to engineering organizations to better serve the broader community. This is crucial in times of climate change and ecological challenges where the vulnerable can be impacted by engineering activities. Taking a global perspective in ethics education will help ensure that scientists and engineers can make a more substantial contribution to development throughout the world. This paper presents the importance (...)

Is calpain activity regulated by membranes and autolysis or by calcium and calpastatin?Darrel E. Goll, Valery F. Thompson, Richard G. Taylor & Teresa Zalewska - 1992 - Bioessays 14 (8):549-556.
Although the Ca2+‐dependent proteinase (calpain) system has been found in every vertebrate cell that has been examined for its presence and has been detected in Drosophila and parasites, the physiological function(s) of this system remains unclear. Calpain activity has been associated with cleavages that alter regulation of various enzyme activities, with remodeling or disassembly of the cell cytoskeleton, and with cleavages of hormone receptors. The mechanism regulating activity of the calpain system in vivo also is unknown. It has been proposed (...)

The resurgence of tuberculosis in the United States is due, in part, to the dismantling of large-scale treatment systems that were a critical part of the disease control effort for the better part of the twentieth century. As the number of cases grows, clinicians, politicians, public health officials and community advocates have grappled with the difficult problem of building systems to care for infected people that are consonant with current knowledge and beliefs about quality care. As an example, the United (...)

When the United Nations launched the Millennium Goals in 2000 to focus global development on humanity rather than GDP, the Global Compact was launched as a collateral effort, challenging business, government, and social sector leaders to transform the global economic system. In 2007, the Six PRME focused on business schools, challenging them to reorient their curricula towards preparing students to (...)
